the 72nd birthday of the King of Thailand and was unveiled at a ceremony
on the 5 December 1999. |

The Phraphratum Warrarach Suriyawong Memorial (Chao Khampong).
Phraphratum Warrarach Suriyawong or Chao Khampong, who the people of
Ubon Ratchathani know as the founder and first governor of the town of
Ubon Ratchathani, was the son of Phrada, who fled the war in Laos.
Phrachao Siri Bun San, the ruler of Vientiane, Laos, came to request the
protection of King Thaksin of Thailand and built a protectorate called
Dong U-phung on the banks of the River Moon. He finished building a moat
around the settlement in 2322 B.E. and then informed King Thaksin that
the work was finished. Later, in 2323 B.E., King Thaksin conferred the
name Ubon Ratchathani on the settlement and appointed Phraphratum
Warrarach Suriyawong or Chao Khampong as governor.

Every year, from the 8 – 11 November, the people of Ubon
Ratchathani province hold activities to honour Chao
Khampong, which in 2551 B.E. will include activities
related to the Monument to Kindness as well. |

The Monument to Kindness is a monument that foreign prisoners of
war built in memory of the kindness towards all humanity of the
people of Ubon Ratchathani who helped prisoners of war that were
captured during the Second World War. These prisoners of war
appreciated the help and sympathy that was given to them by the
people of Ubon Ratchathani and likened those people to second
mothers who gave them a chance of a new life. This monument is
evidence that really shows the kindheartedness of the people of
Ubon Ratchathani. |

The
Sculpture for United Progress is a sculpture that was built according to
the Sculptures and Environment for Youth Project and shows unanimity
between four countries – Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. |
